Fabulous Films, out October 29

When the Fantom threatens the safety of 1899 Europe, an unlikely group of familiar heroes join up to save the day.

Stephen Norrington’s troubled 2003 adaptation of Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill’s comic book series about Victorian superheroes gets a re-release from Fabulous Films, and might be just a little better than you remembered. Of course, we can thank The Avengers for being the equal worst film of Sean Connery’s career (tying with Zardoz) meaning that his version of H Rider Haggard’s Allan Quartermain isn’t his acting low point.

Somewhat unfairly, the movie is often remembered best for its behind-the-scenes dramas with director Norrington and star Connery not getting on at all. Neither party have made a film since, which is all a bit of a shame because while this movie is muddled and all over the place it’s still an enjoyable two hours with some inventive design and grand ideas.

There’s a commentary by Costume Designer Jacqueline West, Visual Effects Supervisor John E. Sullivan, Make-Up Effects Supervisor Steve Johnson and Miniatures Creator Matthew Gratzner and another by the producers Don Murphy and Trevor Albert and actors Shane West (Tom Sawyer), Jason Flemyng (Jekyll and Hyde) and Tony Curran (Rodney Skinner). A dozen deleted or extended scenes and a handful of production featurettes and trailers complete the content.

Verdict: A classic by no means, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen deserves a second viewing if you dismissed it outright in the early Noughties. The extras don’t shed much more about the production than you’d already guessed, but the commentaries feature different perspectives from a wide range of behind-the-scenes talent and make a change from the usual studio fluff. 7/10
