A new app takes the chance out of dating by automatically matching you with your next partner and prescribing how long the relationship will last.

Charlie Brooker has taken a good look at online dating and ‘hook up’ apps like Tinder and crafted an optimistic love story, showing that not all technology has to be bad for us. Director Timothy Van Patten is probably best known for Game of Thrones and has a fairly straightforward human drama to follow as Georgina Campbell (previously in Broadchurch and soon to be seen in Syfy’s Superman prequel Krypton) and Joe Cole enjoy a short relationship before having to endure some less meaningful encounters.

The main question here is whether the system is always correct. The AI voice stresses that everything happens for a reason and yet our young couple believe that their love is stronger than the decisions being meted out by the computers. Should they carry on, accepting what they’re told, or is it time to break free and climb over the wall?

Verdict: As close as Black Mirror gets to a love story (Season 3’s San Junipero notwithstanding), there’s an optimistic suggestion that even in the wake of the rise of the machines, true love will find a way. 7/10
