Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, out now

The highly acclaimed screen sequel to the legendary comic book.

A lot of people – myself included – felt that any continuation of Watchmen risked dilution of the effect of the original. This covers the prequels (which were underwhelming) and the incorporation of some of the characters to the DC Universe. But this HBO series manages to both honour what came before and strike out in its own way – and, like its comic book predecessor, holds up to repeated viewing.

Nick Joy’s reviews of each individual episode can be read elsewhere on the site (starting here), and he identifies the strengths and weaknesses of the show. Rewatching it in more of a binge than its weekly release allowed shows better how some of the threads underlie every episode before being pulled together in the final third of the show.

The home entertainment version contains all of the episodes in high definition detail, as well as two extra episodes’ worth of extra material. These are pretty much all worth a watch – seeing what was regarded as noteworthy for the trailer being a case in point – and only will take a few minutes of your time. There’s 35 minutes or so of the NYCC panel, but no commentaries, which feels like something of a missed opportunity.

Verdict: That rarity – a self-contained sequel that both honours and expands its original. 9/10
