Second Sight, out now

David Freeman wakes after a fall – and finds eight years have passed… but he hasn’t changed at all…

Randal Kleiser’s 1986 Disney movie is renowned for its early use of effects techniques that we take for granted now, but the director – whose previous work included Grease and The Blue Lagoon – never loses sight of the fact that it’s the human drama that’s at the heart of the story he’s telling. Joey Cramer is eminently credible as David with strong performances from Cliff DeYoung and Veronica Cartwright as his parents, and Matt Adler as his ‘younger’ brother (who’s now four years older than David). Alan Silvestri’s enjoyable score underpins both emotional and action beats, and at 90 minutes, the movie doesn’t outstay its welcome.

For cinephiles and fans of the movie, this new edition is an essential purchase. Second Sight have put together a terrific batch of value added material – Randal Kleiser talks about some of it here in our interview with him, and his commentary is well worth a listen. There are brand new interviews with members of the cast as well as the Kleiser brothers and Edward Eyth discussing the effects. The limited edition also comes with a book containing the storyboards.

Verdict: An excellent package surrounds an enjoyable slice of 80s family fun. 8/10
