The Doctor plots a course to take him and Donna to Swinging Sixties London, but the TARDIS drops them into the middle of a peasouper in 1952.

Big Finish adds another quest (and indeed another supermarket) for the Doctor Who vinyl collector, re-releasing Roy Gill’s audio adventure from this year’s Tenth Doctor Boxset Three, and it’s a fine platter in heavyweight neon green.

The Great Smog that killed 12,000 Londoners is a well-documented story – it was already covered in David Bishop’s Amorality Tale for the Third Doctor – but Gill adds a new slant on this real-life tragedy, giving his leads the opportunity to really sink their teeth into the dialogue. David Tennant is particularly bouncy as the Doctor, finding the positives in the least likely of circumstances, while Catherine Tate slips so easily back into Donna Noble, and the sparky interplay between them is a joy.

Verdict: A forbidden gay romance, a dinosaur and some very expressive theatrical luvvies – what’s not to love about this audio drama that maximises its medium to play up the claustrophobia of being trapped in the fog while also sharing some relevant commentary. 8/10
