Titan, out now

The definitive story of the rise of Harley Quinn…

Harley’s arrival in the DC universe came some time after I’d read Batman comics regularly, and I only caught the occasional episode of the animated series in which she debuted (which I thoroughly enjoyed when I did). My first real exposure to the lunacy she embodies was in the Suicide Squad movie, and Margot Robbie’s insanity was one of that film’s saving graces.

Paul Dini, who created the character, wrote a full outline for this novel to which Pat Cadigan has brought her formidable talents for characterisation and observation. It’s a treat from start to finish, as Harleen Quinzel metamorphoses into Harley Quinn, the “puddin’” loving trickster. Cadigan doesn’t simply present Harley’s side of things – we are privy to the Joker’s inner thoughts as well, and we get brief moments with the Batman (and some interesting insights into him and the way that Gotham reacts to him from Harley’s perspective).

Add some gorgeous phrases – my favourite being a nurse’s “first thought was that some rough beast slouching toward Bethlehem had got off at the exit to Arkham again” – and tips of the hat to other parts of the Bat-franchise, and you’ve got another fine DC novel.

Verdict: A highly enjoyable dive into the mad mad mad mad mad world of Mr J and his best gal… 9/10
