Arrow Academy, out August 3

After a wealthy banker is given an opportunity to participate in a mysterious game, his life is turned upside down when he becomes unable to distinguish between the game and reality.

Hot off his 1995 hit, Seven, David Fincher’s next studio movie was 1997’s paranoid thriller The Game. A non-stop descent into hell for Michael Douglas’ Nicholas Van Orton, we watch his shift from a misanthropic life of privilege to losing literally everything – maybe even his life?

The movie relies on a killer final twist at the end of a series of twists, and to its credit, it works equally well on repeat viewings. If anything, a rewatch focuses you on the clues that you probably missed first time round. Is it highly implausible? Absolutely. But there’s a certain Twilight Zone charm to it all, and there’s great support from Sean Penn as Douglas’ brother.

The movie has been available as a regular vanilla Blu-ray release since 2010, and Arrow Academy are releasing an expanded two-disc director’s-approved collectors edition. With commentaries by Nick Pinkerton and Fincher, Isolated music and effects track, interviews with Michael Douglas and a rare full-frame home video version, there’s plenty here to justify a double dip if the original is already in your collection. This limited edition also boasts a 200-page hardback, reproducing selected archive materials. Disc 2 is a DVD and includes even more archive making-of content.

Verdict: If you’re a fan of the movie and want to trade up your regular release, there’s plenty here to justify the second purchase. And if you don’t have it at all, this a great, exhaustive release. 9/10
