Mediumrare, out now

All 49 episodes across both original seasons of The Outer Limits have been given a Blu-ray upgrade, and the quality is stunning.

ABC’s hour-long sci-fi anthology series arrives on home entertainment in new HD transfers, many bolstered by audio commentaries, and a bunch of legacy promotional material.

While The Twilight Zone is regarded by many as the ultimate 60s sci-fi anthology, the quality of The Outer Limits should not be understated. With guest stars like Donald Pleasence, David McCallum, Martin Landau, Barry Morse, William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Robert Duvall and Adam West, and written by the likes of Harlan Ellison, Joseph Stefano and Leslie Stevens, there’s no shortage of talent both in front of and behind the camera.

Each of the episodes, which were shot on film, has been stunningly transferred to HD, displaying rich contrast and acceptable grain. Most of the episodes have audio commentaries, many by show aficionados David J Schow and Tim Lucas. There’s also a bunch of promos created for TNT’s screening of the episodes, talking to key guest stars. Schow talks at length on why he wrote the series companion book, there’s a 75-minute panel from a 2000 television festival, 1963 ABC promo, and a look back at the show while also promoting the 90s revival.

Verdict: The extras are fun, but feel like they’re destined for single views. Buy this box for the impressive HD transfers of the episodes – for my money, the best ever ‘monster of the week’ show. 8/10
