X-Men ’97 was one of the most entertaining things Marvel have put out in years and we’ve got our first trailer for season 2. Get in, mutants, exhorts Alasdair Stuart, we’re going time travelling!

0.11 – ‘it’s hard to believe what’s not waitin’ for me.’

Gambit has spent multiple periods working for Apocalypse as the Horseman of Death. Even if I didn’t know that, watching this trailer would confirm he’s so back. The first 22 seconds are all him and Rogue and honestly, good! They’re really fun!

0.26 – ‘The X-Men are scattered through time. In the past…’

Firstly, multiple time zones! Awesome! Secondly it’s going to be so awkward if this Pharoah manipulating high technology in ancient Egypt is a Kang variant.

0.28 – Apocalypse

Done right, he’s one of the X-Men’s best villains. Here he’s one of the largest too! Holy crap! Look at the size of the dude! Also what are those automatons in pieces on the floor? And who’s the figure we’re sharing a POV with?

Also Team Ancient Times seems to be Beast, Professor X, Nightcrawler and Rogue.

0.31 – ‘The future’

One of the pivotal stories of the early ’90s was Cable’s origin, where Jean and Scott both have to maroon him in the future but also get to live an extended period of time there raising him. Judging by this (and isn’t the cut from ancient Apocalypse to Future Apocalypse great?) that’s what we’re getting here. I see Teen Cable, old Bishop bottom left and two folks I can’t identify. Also an extremely good cow or perhaps, bison.

0.36 – Team Ancient Times, Assemble!

There we are! Beast, young Bshop, Rogue, Professor X, a bearded Magneto and Nightcrawler. Looks like they’ve been there a while. And hey look, more of those robots!

Also? GREAT outfits, especially on Beast and Rogue.

0.44 – ‘I must strike when they are at their most vulnerable… the 1990s!’

I was a comic retailer in the very early ’00s and this made me laugh entirely too hard. Also that’s Iceman and Polaris in one of the photos, Storm, Jean and Polaris in a second and the entire original X-Men team in the third. Except Polaris, Magneto’s daughter whose house this presumably is, was never in that first intake…

0.49 – ‘At least buy me a drink first!’

God I love what they’re doing with Morph!

0.51 – PSYCHIC WOLVERINE CYCLOPS CLAWS PRISMATIC BLAST!

Also those are Grant Morrison/Frank Quitely era uniforms!

0.54 – Sunspot and Jubilee

Sunspot and Jubes had one of the best plots last season and I love this shot of Sunspot hurling his best at the bad guys so she can light them up, literally.

0.59 – Kurt Wagner, Swashbuckler in any time period

Nightcrawler dismantling some thugs in the most acrobatic way possible? I’m there.

1.02 – FORGE!

Forge, whose mutant power is invention, was a major player last season and I’m really happy to see him back. Also looks like that narration we’ve been hearing is Bishop talking to him. Also ‘We gotta get the X-Men back, TO THE 90S!’ is both the sort of endless nostalgia that makes me roll my eyes and such a wonderful, knowing line.

1.09 – War, huh! What is it good for?

Posing against, if you’re Cable.

1.11 – Storm

Powers fully restored, classic blue and gold uniform, looking incredibly cool. YES.

1.13 – The Wild Sentinel

This looks like the Wild Sentinel that destroyed Genosha, on the night it did that. Given we’re travelling in time this year I suspect we’re going to see that battle again, and have it go differently.

1.13 – COLOSSUS!

My favourite enormously strong Russian poet kneels in the wreckage of a sentinel cradling his dead sister Magik. God I hope we get some Pete and Ilyana this year, they’re great.

1.14 – X-Corp!

The idea of the X-Men, or an X-Men team being run as a corporation has been played with for years. Looks like these Sentinels (?) have a problem with that.

1.15 – Exodus and Danger

These two go past really quickly but they’re both fun. The orange gentleman is Exodus, a 12th century French knight and one of Apocalypse’s projects who becomes one of Magneto’s. The robotic woman is Danger, the living embodiment of the X-Men’s Danger Room.

1.21 – Never Forget

The memorial wall, presumably in Genosha. That’s Magik up top, with Gambit front and centre too and Marrow, a very cool ’00s character who could grow bone extrusions and throw them. Can’t quite make out the others. But who’s the VERY large chap with Rogue, Nightcrawler and Beast?

1.26 – All of this has happened before…

This goes by really quickly but seems to be a hieroglyph of Apocalypse surrounded by Professor X, Magneto, Beast, Bishop, Rogue and Nightcrawler. So he sees them coming…

1.29 – Morph becomes Deadpool!

So cool!

1.30 – The Archangel/Psylocke Tag Team!

So cool, so nineties! Archangel, another Apocalypse refugee has long been connected with Psylocke in the comics. The sister of Captain Britain, Betsy Braddock’s consciousness is trapped in the body of a female ninja assassin. It’s a LOT and has since been walked back so this is either Betsy, or Kwannon, the woman whose body she was dropped into.

1.31 – Portal

Apocalypse having a portal in the shape of his own face is so on point. Interestingly, this is Beast, Nightcrawler and Rogue and they’re in the Morrison uniforms so presumably this is after everyone gets back from the past.

1.44 – Father Nightcrawler

Kurt Wagner is an ordained Catholic priest in the comics. His relationship with his faith has always been a favourite plot of mine and I’m so pleased to see it here.

This looks enormous and I’m so excited. X-Men 97 returns on July 1st on Disney
