AudioGO, out November 10

Sarah Jane and the gang are intrigued by a Victorian brass head that Mr Smith identifies as containing a research probe from the future…

The TV series may be no more, but as fans of Torchwood have discovered, that’s no barrier to further audio adventures appearing. Martin Day is the first author outside the Cardiff production team to write for the new line up – Sarah Jane, Rani, Clyde and Sky – that would hopefully have continued for many years, and he captures Sky’s book-learning and electrical abilities well.

Daniel Anthony steps into the role of narrator, and unsurprisingly gets the inflections for Clyde’s lines better than anyone else’s – although it’s good to see that the whole story isn’t told from his point of view. The story moves along rapidly (although avoid reading the back cover too closely – it gives far too much away), and Day creates some interesting scenarios that would have been great to see on screen, particularly the steampunk element to the story.

My only quibble is that there’s a little too much reliance on one of the clear inspirations for the story, particularly in terms of the backstory for the central guest character. But this is a minor flaw in an otherwise enjoyable tale.  7/10
