Manga Entertainment, out now

In the futuristic world of 2019 Neo-Tokyo, Kaneda and his motorcycle gang tear through a city that’s divided by growing tensions.

How can it be that Katsuhiro Otomo’s landmark cyberpunk classic is 32 years old? While released six years after Ridley Scott’s masterpiece Blade Runner, both movies are set in the far off year of 2019, and luckily neither proved to be too prophetic, and both movies proved to be incredibly influential to subsequent dystopian media.

The movie had a limited UK release of this 4K print in October while some cinemas were open, but there was limited opportunity to see it, and now you can watch it from the safety of your own home… and it looks gorgeous. This was the movie that introduced so many Westerners to mainstream anime, and it’s fitting that it has been given the deluxe treatment.

Thirty-one years after World War III, it’s a dirty, violent world terrorised by motorcycle gangs and dark organisations. The animation has always been superior, and has been cleaned up considerably for this version. There’s 5.1 audio tracks in both original Japanese (with English subtitles) and the dubbed English language version. In addition to the UHD disc, there’s a regular Blu-ray copy, a disc of special features (interviews, trailers, storyboards and more) and a 40-page booklet of new writing.

Verdict: The brightest, cleanest version of Otomo’s Manga classic that you’ll likely ever see – the vibrant neon colours of its palette positively glow in HDR against the blackest of blacks. 8/10
