Jennifer comes clean about her powers. Anissa comes clean about everything else. Gambi investigates the weapons used to frame Black Lightning, Jefferson and Anissa investigate Green Light and Henderson investigates the corrupt police officers all of which leads to a single lab and a single fight.

Another perfectly balanced episode of one of the most impressive shows on TV right now. China Anne McClain is especially good this week as Jennifer reacts with horror to her powers, her dad’s powers, her sister’s powers and everything else. The idea of embodying the superheroic ideal, from both sides, in Jefferson’s daughters is inspired and pays off brilliantly here. Neither side is right and neither side is wrong, but it’s especially impressive to see the downside of abilities like these explored so well. You also absolutely see Jennifer’s point: that her family have betrayed her and that her abilities, instead of opening her life up, lock it down.

That impressive, all around approach is reflected in the main plot. The three investigations leading to one confrontation is a great way of showing the scale of the ASA’s operation. It also leads to Anissa’s debut in her all new, Gambified costume. It’s a great scene, visually smart and character driven. Anissa saving her dad is a nice beat. Her dad returning the favour is a better one. This is a very different superhero dynamic and the show is just getting started exploring it.

Verdict: Smart, character based and very funny (the Barack Obama mask especially), this is a standout episode in a standout year. Recommended, as is everything else the show has done this year. 9/10
