101 Films, out now

In the year 3000 there’ll be no more Olympic Games, World Series or Super Bowl

This cheapo 1978 sci-fi hokum from Roger Corman’s stable proved to be more exciting behind the scenes (violence between actors and directors) than what was captured on celluloid.

It’s after the Neutron Wars, and the wastelands are inhabited by gladiators, mutant cannibals and wicked warlords. Only range guides Kaz Oshay (David Carradine) and Deneer (former Playboy Playmate Claudia Jennings) fight for good against the likes of regular B-movie villain Richard Lynch as Ankar Moor.

It’s pretty much as you’d expect – dirt bikes with lasers, nudity, poor acting – typical exploitation stuff from this era. Filmed around popular Los Angeles desert locations Vasquez Rocks and Brunson Caves, Carradine says his career never fully recovered from it, and who are we to argue? But at least it got there before Mad Max and those countless Italian post-apocalyptic rip-offs.

101 Films’ release features a lively commentary  with co-director Allan Arkush and editor Larry Bock, the theatrical trailer and TV and radio spots.

Verdict: It’s trash, but if you’re in the right frame of mind it might tickle your nostalgia fancy. 5/10
