With The Mandalorian and Grogu opening tomorrow, Alasdair Stuart brings us up to date with the pair’s adventures.
Din and Grogu are living with a group of Mandalorians who are inducting a young child into the Way. After helping save a Mandalorian child, Din learns that the mines of Mandalore still exist. That means he can conceivably become a full Mandalorian once again. Stopping off on Nevarro to revive IG-11, the assassin droid he’s alternately clashed with and allied with, Din mees with Bo-Katan, now living in an old Mandalorian castle on a nearby world. She reveals she’s lost the Darksaber, refuses to help Din and tells him to go to Mandalore alone.
Looking for repairs for IG-11 Din visits old friend and frequent guest Peli Motto, a Tatooine mechanic. She sells him an R5 unit for the journey and Din arrives at the mines and is almost immediately captured by scavengers. Bo arrives and saves him, and Din finally enters the Living Waters of the mine. This returns him to his status as a full Mandalorian, but before he can celebrate, a sudden drop off sends him plummeting to the bottom of the underwater sea. Drowning, he’s saved by Bo, who on the way up, sees a Mythosaur, a legendary Mandalorian creature…
On Coruscant, Dr Pershing falls in with Elia Kane, a former comms officer with Moff Gideon and a fellow recipient of the New Republic amnesty. Kane betrays him and Pershing has his mind wiped, Meanwhile, Din and Bo return to the Enclave and both are welcomed back to the Mandalorian fold.
Grogu begins Mandalorian combat training but clashes with Ragnar Viszla, a fellow newcomer. He flashes back to the memories Luke helped unlock, of his rescue by Master Kelleran Beq from the Jedi Temple on the day Order 66 was triggered. In the present day, Din, Bo-Katan and Vizsla’s father Paz clash but ultimately save the child from danger.
Carson Teva is contacted by Greef Karga for help with a pirate group harassing the planet. Teva’s boss refuses to help, so he contacts Din who in turn persuades the Enclave to help. They do so, driving the pirates off. Having mentioned the Mythosaur sighting to the Armorer, Bo-Katan is declared the one destined to unite the Mandalorians. On the way back to his squadron, Carson Teva finds Moff Gideon’s transport has been destroyed. And a fragment of beskar alloy is in the wreckage…
Bo-Katan, Din and Grogu head to Plazir-15 an idyllic world where Din’s former army is barracked. Helping the eccentric rulers of the world, Captain Bombadier and the Duchess (Jack Black and Lizzo in spectacularly good form) deal with a droid separatist (Christopher Lloyd everyone!) B-Katan challenges Woves and wins back her army.
Moff Gideon is informed by Elia Kane of the Mandalorians’ plan to retake their world. Gideon was responsible for its destruction and he consults the Shadow Council of Imperial remnant warlords for advice as well as demanding to know just where Grand Admiral Thrawn is…
Before travelling to Mandalore, Greef Karga gifts Grogu with IG-12, a modified IG-11 who he can pilot. It is unlawfully adorable.
On Mandalore, Bo-Katan, Din and Grogu meet a clan who survived on the surface and Bo-Katan admits that she surrendered to Gideon in order to try to spare their people further horror but he refused to accept it.
The group arrive at the Great Forge and are ambushed by stormtroopers in Beskar armour. Din is captured by Gideon, also clad in Beskar, who explains he wants to complete the Great Purge of Mandalore. The group are boxed in but Bo-Katan uses the Darksaber to make an escape and Paz Viszla is killed buying them time.
Regrouping with Axe Woves, Bo-Katan and her troops attempt to retake Mandalore even as Gideon’s forces take to the air. Grogu helps Din escape and they discover why he wanted the child and his blood; countless force-sensitive clones of Gideon, waiting to be born. Din destroys them.
In a gruelling final battle, Bo-Katan, Din and Grogu fight Gideon and his personal guard. All seems lost until Woves drives the Mandalorian flag ship into Gideon’s base, destroying it. Grogu shields them from the blast using the Force and Gideon is incinerated. When they make it back to the surface, Woves leads the victory chant. The Mandalorians have a home again and, even with the Darksaber destroyed in the fight, a leader in Bo-Katan Kryze.
Din formally adopts Grogu, the Mandalorians restart the Great Forge and Din takes up contract work for Carson Teva. he moves into a cabin on the outskirts of the Nevarro capital and lives there with his son, while IG-11, newly rebuilt, takes over Marshal duties.
