A politician believes he meets the girl of his dreams – but fate has other ideas…

Based on the Philip K. Dick story Adjustment Team, this is a science fiction film very much in the mould of movies like Somewhere in Time and Quest for Love – it’s a love story which uses sci-fi tropes to tell its tale, and along the way brings up many questions about fate and predestination.

If you get a nagging feel of déjà vu, it may be because there are some superficial similarities with the Observers seen in Fringe, although the adjusters have abilities more like those manipulating the world in the underrated Dark City – they know what is coming and are able to alter events… except when they come up against a man who simply is not going to give up. The tagline of “Bourne meets Inception” is really misleading, and doesn’t reflect the human element of the movie (not something that’s high on a description of either of those films!)

Filmed to good effect in New York, rather than somewhere else doubling as the Big Apple – as one of the DVD extras makes clear – The Adjustment Bureau is an entertaining 100 minutes, strengthened by the obvious chemistry between Matt Damon and Emily Blunt as the two leads.

Verdict: Undemanding but enjoyable movie that makes you think rather than leaves you with a headache.  7/10
