StudioCanal, out now

A swordsman must confront his immortal opponent, a murderously brutal barbarian who lusts for the fabled Prize.

There can be only one… more release of Russell Mulcahy’s 1986 fantasy original, which launched sequels, TV series, TV movies and more. StudioCanal’s new 4K collector’s edition is surely the Prize the fans have been waiting for, and it’s impressive.

In addition to the UHD 4K and Blu-ray presentations on separate discs, there’s a 64-page booklet with brand new essays, prequel comic The Way of the Sword, four badges, a poster and some art cards. The four-part documentary The Immortal Magic of Highlander documentary gets a 4K transfer, and there’s a bunch of audio commentaries from the creatives  and new featurettes on the soundtrack and cinematography.

Of the 4K transfer, this benefits from HDR10/ Dolby Vision depth of colour, which is useful in some of the murkier scenes (the car park fight in particular is far more defined in the shadows). while the colours of Christopher Lambert’s kilt and Sean Connery’ purple suit have a lot more punch to them. There’s understandably still some grain, but it was there from the outset.

Verdict: It’s a kind of magic. This new release of this beloved movie looks better than ever and is supported by new extras and collector’s paraphernalia. 10/10
