Control tries to implement its plan.

Spoilers follow.

It’s another episode of twists and turns for the Discovery crew as a Control-controlled Leland tries to steal the data from the Sphere – potentially negating all the hard work that Gabrielle Burnham has done bouncing between the centuries to ensure that the wasteland she knows exists in the future (and which Spock saw in his vision) won’t come to pass. It’s also, at long last, an episode that starts to give us some answers as to what’s been going on all season, although it’s clear that Michael’s mother isn’t responsible for everything that has been puzzling the Discovery crew.

The show is firing on all cylinders here – some great moments for the core cast (Anson Mount’s Pike’s frustration as things seem to be going to hell is palpable) as well as guest star Sonja Sohn; strong effects work seamlessly integrated into the live action (the sets are nowhere near the size they appear to be, for a start); and an opportunity for Michelle Yeoh’s Georgiou to get into a down and dirty fight with Alan van Sprang’s Leland. Spock and Michael have a number of strong scenes, with some nice mirroring in the final one of their earlier confrontation during the season.

Verdict: Another enjoyable hour. 8/10
