With Jonah returned to full strength, things are looking tenser than ever within the PRIDE group. Meanwhile, the kids plan on a big reveal of what their parents have been up to at the Gala opening the new school, but are they ready to follow through, especially when they aren’t being completely honest with one another?

With the last episode delivering a full hour of breathless, action-packed excitement, surely this week the wick would be turned down a little? Well, yes, and no. There might not be as much action going on this week, but that doesn’t mean that nothing is happening. With Jonah returned, things are getting very interesting indeed.

First of all, there’s Jonah himself – with the revelation last week of Karolina’s relationship to him, the tension between him and the ‘unable to go Ultra’ Frank is even more palpable. What’s not completely clear is the nature of the relationship between Leslie and Jonah, and why Frank is even necessary, but that’s just part of the issue. Frank has now decided that he no longer wants to pursue life in the church, and that may cause issues down the line.

The gang are meanwhile entirely set on hacking into the Wizard servers and broadcasting the videos stored there of the PRIDE ceremonies and sacrifices, to make sure once and for all that the truth is revealed. There are a few problems with that plan though, not the least of which is tension among the group themselves. One confrontation in particular highlights once again that for all their gifts and unique circumstances, these are still a group of teenagers, with all the hormonal complications that brings.

There’s trouble too, among the PRIDE members. Robert is pushing Janet to reveal all to Victor about their affair, so that both can leave their respective spouses and start a new life together. Of course, this assumes that Victor and Tina are unaware of what’s going on, and when the reveal is made, it’s not in the manner that Robert may have hoped for or expected. Then something else occurs which requires the input of Jonah – unimpressed already at the apparent fracturing of the PRIDE group and the secrets and lies among them – and it has some… unexpected consequences, the extent of which will no doubt be revealed later on.

Karolina also discovers yet another element to her unique attributes, while Gert discovers a previously unsuspected talent for flirting (when she isn’t half-heartedly sermonising on her usual female empowerment narratives at least). Mollie meanwhile, is terrified of the PRIDE parents being locked up before she can discover whatever truths Catherine might reveal to her about her parents, and yet again, her impulsiveness may cause further problems for the group. Still, it’s nice to be finally rid of the ongoing ‘gag’ of her trying to tell everyone about her powers and being shushed – four episodes was quite enough.

All of which leads to a tense finale in which nothing has gone according to how the characters on both sides of the fence might have planned, and everything is very much up in the air. What happens next, will be interesting to say the least.

Verdict: Still delivering on tense drama with believable characters. There are no ‘good’ or ‘bad’ guys here, rather a set of complex people, all of whom are capable (and culpable) of good and bad things. Between this and The Gifted, comic book TV is finally starting to grow up. 8/10
