Paramount Home Entertainment, out now

It’s 1985 and the death of a former superhero casts shockwaves across the metahuman community as the Doomsday Clock ticks closer to midnight.

Forget all the internet chatter about #ReleaseTheSnyderCut of Justice League, as Zack Snyder’s best superhero movie (faint praise admittedly) is finally released in the UK in its most complete version to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

Originally released theatrically at 162 minutes, a Director’s Cut followed for home release at 186 minutes, with a separate disc comprising the animated Tales of the Black Freighter interludes. Now everything has been sequenced into a single mega cut – the ultimate cut, clocking in at 215 minutes.

Fans of the movie (I count myself here) have argued that anything that brings it closer to the content of the 12 issue Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons limited comic book series must be a good thing, and now that the movie has been transferred to 4K, it’s the best yet. The saturated yellows and reds are stunning in HDR, Snyder’s comic book stylisation vibrant and compelling.

The extras are included on a separate Blu-ray Disc (and hence not 4K) but there’s a fine selection of documentaries – The Phenomenon: The Comic That Changed Comics, Real Super Heroes, Real Vigilantes, and Mechanics: Technologies of a Fantastic World, as well as 11 ‘Making of’ Webisodes and a My Chemical Romance music video.

Verdict: The movie still features one of the most awkward sex scenes committed to celluloid, and the changed ending shows a lack of confidence in the source, but this is still one helluva movie, looking absolutely glorious, and perfectly timed for those who entered this universe via the new TV show. 9/10
