From the Kelvin timeline to Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard, a look inside the mind of the visionary designer.

If you’re a fan of modern Star Trek, you’ll be very familiar with the work of designer Neville Page, even if you didn’t realise it. In the Foreword by Alex Kurtzman, Page’s talents are rightly lauded, and this coffee table art book is a great showcase for his work.

Written by Joe Nazarro, we discover how Page entered the industry and has his first Star Trek gig in 2009 when J J Abrams brought him on board the first Kelvinverse movie to design creatures. One of my favourite stories is how he created a makeup test for Nero and ended up as an on-screen Romulan with a line of dialogue. He then contributed to Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond

Moving on to Discovery, we’re treated to many Klingon designs (creature, armour and weaponry), an outstanding but impractical design for Saru and other recognisable alien races. For Picard, there are pages of designs for the show’s Romulans and Borg

Verdict: Serving as both an up-close portfolio of Page’s excellent work and inspiration for would-be designers, this is another worthy addition to your Star Trek library. 7/10
