David and Kristen visit David’s father to discover why he is using one of the sigils in his art, as Ben has choices to make, and there’s an unexpected arrival at the Bouchard house…

There’s a lot to unpack in the latest episode of Evil, with some spiked sangria causing interesting developments in the relationship between Mike Colter’s David and Katja Herbers’ Kristen – which push things to a level that means that the next episode is going to be very interesting…

…given that Kristen’s husband has returned unexpectedly early from his travels. The scenes between Patrick Brammall as Andy and the four girls are as strong as those they share with Herbers, and there’s a very recognisable vibe between him and his mother-in-law, particularly given the secrets she has to hide. (Does she really have nowhere else to go for her activities with Leland?)

But back to David and Kristen – both have shocking visions, which play out very differently. David isn’t aware that his is one until later (and there’s a nice ambiguity about whether the person he meets really is there or not), while Kristen ends up as a birthing partner to something that’s wandering close to David Cronenberg territory. The show has been good so far about consequences, and hopefully both elements will be followed through.

Meanwhile, Aasif Mandvi’s Ben is still caught up with the ‘ghost hunters’ from episode 5 (established as a month previously – the show’s staying pretty much in real time). There’s an odd twist to his relationship and I’m reserving judgment on where this one is going – there’s potential for a very different sort of evil here.

Verdict: Strong character work moves the pieces around for the second half of the season. 8/10
