On Saru’s last mission as Captain Burnham’s Number One, the team ventures to a seemingly abandoned planet to hunt for what might be the greatest treasure in the galaxy.

In the first episode, there was a lot of heavy lifting to establish the McGuffin that’s driving this season – technology that ties in to the creation of humanoids – and that’s amplified in this second episode which primarily exists to create the multi-part quest for the rest of the year. With multiple pieces of a map to be retrieved, the narrative is set, while also saying farewell to Saru.

Burnham and her Number One beam down to a planet to further their search and are trapped by armed sentinel drones. As with the best Star Trek, the resolution comes from smart people working together and hashing out a resolution. It’s not as big an episode as the season opener, and is probably closer to what we should expect over the coming weeks.

Verdict: Nuts and bolts Star Trek that serves its purpose taking the narrative further, while not being particularly memorable as a single episode. 6/10
