A taxidermist has had enough – and starts to take her revenge.

Warning to everyone listening to this – this is adult horror, and really doesn’t pull its punches. Warning to males listening…

No, I’ll just leave it as, warning to males listening, and let you start to wonder exactly what horrors are in store.

Based on the play that appeared at the Vault last Spring, Gorgon is a no holds-barred look at the mythical creatures, as well as a scream of anger at a society that can treat people like shit and expect it to be treated as normal. It’s part cathartic release, part investigation, part manic murder spree – and I suspect that you may well give a cheer when some of the characters meet their comeuppance.

Diana is pushed just that stage too far, and we not only hear (and very definitely see in our mind’s eye) the results of that, but also, potentially, what brought her to this point. Some of the triggers are normal; some of them are normal for this sort of story – but to say she’s an unreliable narrator would be being a little unkind to Keyser Soze!

It’s not a play to try to do anything else while you’re listening to it – there are jumps in the narrative that play with the conventions of time – but it’s one that has a great deal to say… and it’s well worth wading through the blood to find it.

Verdict: Horrifying, horrendous and gripping – Gorgon is an experience unlike any other. 8/10
