Iron Man 2 (with thanks to our intrepid editor for pointing me at this one)
There’s a beat in the final action scene in Iron Man 2 where a kid in an Iron Man mask stands up to one of the Hammer drones. In the original movie, it’s just a kid. One played by one of Jon Favreau’s children in fact. Aww.
In the run up to Homecoming however, director Jon Watts suggested that this is in fact a young Peter Parker. On the one hand, it’s the sort of cheap canon pop that always annoys some folks. On the other, it actually gives Peter and Tony’s friendship a surprising amount of emotional context.
Peter isn’t on screen for this but honestly, I’ll use any excuse to play this scene:
God, I miss Luis.
Then there’s Captain America: Civil War of course. Tom Holland’s starmaking turn here is delightful. I love how much of a kid he actually is, and how horrified the others are that Tony basically put a toy soldier in the fight. Also while Peter’s been funnier, he’s rarely more consistently funny than he is in Civil War. The ‘Really old movie’ gag about Empire Strikes Back is perfect.
That catches us up with the first full length Holland movie, so we’ll see you back here next time for that.
