Silva Screen, out now

A selection of cues from the classic TV series.

Barry Gray’s music for the Supermarionation series forms a key part of my childhood, and my love of soundtracks and scores. There have been various releases over the years of music from the show that’s most associated with the Supermarionation project, and Silva Screen have now added another selection.

Apparently featuring music that’s not been released before (the portion from Path of Destruction, for one, but unfortunately the track notes don’t give further details) this aims to be definitive. It certainly includes all the cues that you might expect, often turning up as part of a larger selection from that particular story, although there are a few oddities – track 3, for example, is billed in the notes as part of Trapped in the Sky, but includes music from elsewhere – and some sharp edits.

It’s an interesting running order, creating suites from various episodes, starting with Trapped in the Sky but not following either production or airdate order, both of which are provided. It aims to provide “an integrated listening experience” (which is something that’s highly subjective), but of course the listener can reprogram the tracks in an order that suits them best.

Verdict: Some of Barry Gray’s best music was composed for Thunderbirds, and much of it is here – another good addition to Silva Screen’s release of his work. 8/10
