After spotting a TARDIS drifting in the vortex, the Sixth Doctor and Constance Clarke encounter the Eleven. And his wife.

It’s Colin Baker’s turn to encounter Mark Bonnar’s unusual Time Lord in this new box set of single disc stories with Lizzie Hopley’s tale acting as a good introduction to the character for those who’ve not met him before. All of his previous personalities live on inside the eleventh body of the Time Lord who takes the title of his most recent persona (and we’ve met the Nine and the Twelve in other adventures). This is a dream – and I suspect occasionally a nightmare – for the actor playing them, keeping track of all the distinct versions, and it’s to both Hopley and Bonnar’s credit that we are aware from the dialogue and delivery exactly which of the (mostly) evil personas it is.

This story throws a new twist into the mix, set at a facility where multiple personalities and their treatment are the norm, and those who only have one voice in their head are looked down upon. Mrs Eleven – aka Miskavel – has her hands full, but we quickly realise how well suited the pair are.

There are strong performances from Baker, Miranda Raison’s Constance, Bonnar and Lucy Gaskell as Miskavel, and even in the midst of some chaotic sequences towards the end, director Ken Bentley and sound designer Andy Hardwick ensure we’ve got a clear track on who is where.

Verdict: A different sort of tale for the Eleven, leaving plenty of questions to be answered in the stories to follow. 8/10
