Gary’s frustration with the Legends leads him to torture them. Neron presents a TED talk. Charlie stages a jail break. Nora gets a new job.

This entire show is a sugar rush inside a fairground ride that’s on fire in the very best of ways, but this episode is a real standout. A major reason for that is John Constantine’s disastrous past laid out for all to see in a TV show. John’s past is horrible and it’s all here and it all works and somehow the episode is still charming and funny and massive.

This is the point in a season where the threads all get gathered in and few shows do that better than Legends. Neron outing magical creatures using Ray’s identity is a delightfully insidious plan, while Zari and Charlie’s jailbreak is vintage Legends on the spot improv. Likewise John who walks into Hell with a plan and a smile and doesn’t even leave with neither. He just doesn’t leave. Yet.

If there’s a problem here it’s that the ‘Gary tortures the team’ plot goes right up to being too far but even that pays off. Not only do we get an on air name check of the Fairly Odd Parents but we also get to see something inside Gary which isn’t demonic or needy. He’s a fundamentally decent guy, he’s just one that needs steering. Much like the Legends all did way back when Rip recruited them. In other words, he fits right in.

Verdict: With three team mates in Hell, a dragon on the loose, a demon with Ray’s face and a plot to take over the world, it all looks pretty bad for the Legends. But when does it not? The CW’s most ridiculous team are going out on a high this season and I sure wouldn’t bet against them. 9/10
