Jo Jones accompanies Kate Stewart and Petronella Osgood to Dorset – the place where Jo died…

The first of Guy Adams’ two scripts for this celebratory set is (to an extent) a quieter affair than the two stories that preceded it (although that’s not suggesting that Nick Briggs’ Lieutenant Wallace is having an easy time of it dealing with certain terrible creatures). The Legacy of Time is marking 20 years of Big Finish, and we’ve had a lot of very different types of stories over the years – from the all-out, pedal to the metal full action tales to more quiet contemplative episodes that look at the Doctor Who universe and make you think.

The Short Trips have been particularly effective at that, and some of the interactions that Jo and Kate have in this story would not feel out of place there. There’s some excellent work from Tim Treloar as the third Doctor, Katy Manning and Jemma Redgrave as they portray their characters facing some very particular dilemmas.

Obviously there’s a good chance that something of a reset button is going to occur at the end of the sixth story, and the events of these tales won’t actually have “happened”, but it’s rather lovely to have a chance to hear Manning as the contemporary Jo interacting with the Doctor with whom she started so long ago. And there’s also the opportunity for a rather lovely passing of the baton…

Verdict: A really enjoyable hour in the company of old friends. 9/10
