One of the tragedies of the collapse of the DCEU was how overlooked Blue Beetle was, notes Alasdair Stuart.

Aside from a weirdly tone-deaf performance from Susan Sarandon it was a joyously Latino, gleefully geeky Spider-Man-esque look at a young hero rising to the occasion. Xolo Maridueña of Cobra Kai nailed the lead, the effects ae great and it’s got way more heart than you might expect. If you haven’t seen it you should. if you have you should see it again because the BEETLE IS BACK, BABY!

Blue Beetle has been confirmed as part of Man of Tomorrow, the Superman sequel filming now. Speaking on Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast, James Gun said: “The first DCU character, for sure, Blue Beetle, and the first full DCU movie is ‘Superman’.”

Gunn claiming Beetle as the top of the DCU brings me so much joy. He and production partner Peter Safrn have stated the plan is for Beetle to be in multiple projects and honestly I can’t wait. He’s grounded and funny and sweet, with a magnificently science fiction background that means he can play well with Lanterns, Superman, Peacemaker or anyone else they’ve got on deck. He’ll be joining Superman, Hawkgirl, Mr Terrific, Guy Gardner and John Stewart who we’ll meet later this year in Lanterns as well as a bunch of other folks who are rumoured but not yet confirmed. But, with SDCC weeks away, I suspect some news is coming…
