We have our first official Star Wars Anime series! The trailer for The Ninth Jedi, which arrives on Disney + and Hulu on 5 August, is live and there are some Things to discuss. Here’s Alasdair.

0.05 – ‘The Jedi and the Sith have disappeared’

Interesting! Also seems to ground us in an alternate universe which is a nice way of side stepping the vast Star Wars continuity.

0.26 – ‘We need Jedi to fight alongside us,’

The quick shots of at least two, maybe three Jedi, tag teaming some bad guys combined with the title have us wondering whether this is a Seven Samurai situation. The Kurosawa classic, like all his movies, is deep in Star Wars’ DNA but this seems a particularly clear influence.

Or does it?

We don’t see any of the other Jedi in the second half of the trailer. And while it initially looks like our heroine is one of them I’m not sure she is. Instead, this looks like one of two possibilities to me:

  • This is a ‘the best of what’s left’ situation and she’s the Ninth Jedi because the previous eight failed.
  • This is a flashback and she’s recruited after the events we see here.

0.48 – Kyber Crystals

I won’t lie, this and the Death Star like weapon we see it converted into did make me go ‘AGAIN?!’ initially. But if this is an alternate universe then it makes some sense to play with the idea differently and this does look different. The weapon seems comparable to Starkiller Base but the energy it fires seems feral and barely controlled. I wonder if this is a timeline where someone tried to build this sort of weapon early.

1.12 – Event Horizon surfing!

Love to see big weird space things and a black hole is always a good time. Cool ship too!

1.14 – ‘Things are about to get a little bumpy.’

YES to more weird steampunk droid pilots! Also that’s one of the Jedi from the opening scenes!

1.28 – Mood Saber

I LOVE the idea of a lightsaber that reflects the heart of its wielder and it looks to be a central McGuffin here. Nawaam, the bad guy wields it and it’s blue! Our heroine wields it and it turns red! Is it a nightmare, a vision or is this a continuation of the morally grey exploration of the Force that The Acolyte did so well?! And IS THAT THE DARKSABER AT THE END?!

The Ninth Jedi looks really good fun and is released on 5 August.
