We’re in the launch run up to Supergirl officially now and there’s some interesting tidbits being dropped, notes Alasdair Stuart.
First off, Claudia Sarne’s gorgeous, melancholy soundtrack suite has been released. It does a great job of echoing David Fleming and John Murphy’s work on the 2025 Superman movie and embodies the emotional complexity of Kara Zor-El. There’s enormous sadness here, and resolute determination. It’s really good and I can’t wait to hear the full album.
Milly Alcock’s also revealed, on Raiders of the Lost Podcast, that Kara is making her debut wearing a family heirloom.
“My cape in this film was remade using material from the original Superman cape,” Alcock noted. “Yeah, I think that they found there was like 16 metres of that material, so yeah, that’s in the back of my cape now.”
I love that so much. It’s a wonderful way of literally sewing this latest iteration into the family business and it adds an extra layer of legitimacy and cultural protection to Alcock, who is being attacked for being a woman in charge of a pulse and opinions by the same shrill little bigot grifters who always go down that road. It also continues the legacy of Reeve in the character and adds a welcome metafictional touch to Kara. We know she’s traumatised, grieving, furious and unsure of her identity. We also know she wears the S and the cape and what they mean. I suspect a lot of her journey will be her realising that too.
Supergirl releases on June 26th and I’m very excited.
