A Quiet Place Part III, which is confusingly the fourth movie in the series is filming now and some stills have surfaced. Alasdair Stuart dug through the noise.

A Quiet Place Part III is putting the family back together and adding some new/old faces too. Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe are back as the surviving members of the Abbott family as is Cillian Murphy as family friend Emmett. Where it gets interesting is who else is back and who’s joining him.

A Quiet Place: Day One is an overlooked, very touching exploration of courage in the face of personal and societal apocalypse and Alex Wolff is a small, meaningful part of it as a hospice carer called Reuben. Reuben’s a great character, relaxed, funny, calm and one of the series’ several interesting models of positive masculinity. The fact he’s back interesting and suggests one of two things. Either he makes it to the present day or we’re getting flashbacks to immediately after Day One.

The stills Digital Spy have put up suggests it may be both. Reuben looks very similar to how he does in Day One and crucially the new star he’s standing next to looks pretty clean cut and untraumatized. Jack O’Connell, beloved in these parts for his role on Sinners as well as so many other excellent turns, is playing a National Guardsman in the movie. One, judging by these stills, who seems to be part of the initial response.

If that’s the case, we’re looking at a two-timeline narrative, maybe even O’Connell’s character or Reuben in the present day flashing back to events early in the attack. Or, and this is the really interesting one, maybe this is part of a concerted fightback. The fact one still shows Wolff and O’Connell both covering their ears suggests, just maybe, this is the start of the counterattack.  Or maybe someone else figured out the weakness to sound earlier…

Exciting times, and a welcome return for one my favourite recent genre franchises. We’ll find out more when it releases next July.
