The weirdest possible live action adaptation since Street Fighter has just announced its cast. And like Street Fighter it’s huge and weird – but doesn’t include a notedly terrible far right stand up comedian!
Alex Garland, of the 28 series and Civil War is writing and directing an adaptation of Elden Ring. Set in the Lands Between, a fictional country ruled over by demigods whose mother Queen Marika owned the Elden Ring, the physical manifestation of order. When she’s shattered, the Ring disappears, her children go to war and the Lands Between fall into chaos. The player is a Tarnished, an exile from the Lands summoned back to repair the Elden Ring and become the new Elden Lord.
It was directed by legendary Hidetaka Miyazaki of Bloodborne, Sekiro and Armoured Core who specialises in extraordinarily difficult games with complex lore and worked with George RR Martin on the worldbuilding for Elden Ring, It’s a very specific type of game with boss fights as puzzles, enormous scale, enormous difficult and a dedicated fanbase. Garland is the perfect choice and he’s put together a fantastic cast. No word on who they’re playing yet but here’s who we’ve got.
- Tom Burke, a pivotal part of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and the excellent, much missed The Lazarus Project.
- Havana Rose Liu is the first of two scene stealing cast members from the superb Bottoms to show up in Elden Ring. She was excellent in complex thriller No Exit too as well her work in upcoming Tuner.
- Sonoya Mizuno is a frequent collaborator with Garland, appearing in Ex Machina, Men and Civil War among others.
- Jonathan Pryce is a legend in his field. He recently did heartbreaking work as The OB, River’s grandfather in AppleTV’s superb Slow Horses and you’ll have seen him in everything from The Storyteller and Whose Line Is It Anyway? to the Pirates of the Caribbean movies as Governor Weatherby Swann.
- Ruby Cruz, a favourite in these parts, has previously stolen the show in the brilliantly funny Bottoms, done stunning work in Willow and is currently in For All Mankind.
- John Hodgkinson is a UK TV frequent flier on shows like The Escape Artist, Holby City and Doctors and previously appeared as Fouche in Napoleon.
- Jefferson Hall came up through UK TV shows like Casualty and The Bill and has been part of Oppenheimer, the 2018 Halloween and Tenet.
- Emma Laird is another Garland frequent flier, having played Jimmima in 28 Years Later and The Bone Temple.
- Peter Serafinowicz, the original voice of Darth Maul, comedy legend and a surprisingly pivotal part of the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie
- Kit Connor known and beloved for Heartstopper on Netflix, Connor is also a vital part of the brilliant Saturday Night and Warfare, which Garland co-wrote and directed with Ray Mendoza, his technical advisor on Civil War
- Ben Whishaw, Q in the Daniel Craig-era Bonds, the voice of Paddington and the fantastically broken murderous human teddy bear Sam in Netflix’s Black Doves
- Cailey Spaeny is yet another frequent Garland collaborator, as part of the excellent Devs and one of the leads of Civil War.
- Nick Offerman is, of course, Ron Swanson in Parks & Rec and countless other iconic roles. Most recently he had a hauntingly unpleasant turn as the President in Civil War.
Elden Ring is in production now.
