The Big G is on the way back… and Alasdair Stuart is ready…
Godzilla Minus One is possibly the best monster movie ever made. Takashi Yamazaki’s movie distils the essence of Godzilla down to incredible intensity, focuses it through the horrors of post-war Japan and the desperate need of its characters to rebuild their lives and creates something truly extraordinary. The Godzilla sequences are incredible (so much so Monarch season 2 paid homage to the daylight open sea boat chase) and the human plot is just as good.
Now, thanks to CinemaCon, we’ve got news of his next two movies. GrandGear aired footage there, and while it’s not out for two years, what we’re hearing has got us sitting up and paying attention. It’s produced by JJ Abrams (start your rampant ‘THIS MUST BE THE CLOVERFIELD SEQUEL’ speculation now!) and involves Gundam style robots fighting it out in urban environments. There’s clearly more to it but the fact Yamazaki is doing a giant robot movie has us preordering our popcorn.
And then, there’s the big lad.
Godzilla Minus Zero releases very soon. Set two years after Godzilla Minus One, it sees Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe return as Koichi Shikishima and Noriko Oishi, still trying to navigate their recovery from Godzilla’s first attack. The teaser is just that, a teaser, but what we see of Godzilla is terrifying. Much larger, even angrier and what’s with the electrical storm?! And the anti-gravity?! And the last shot, with him towering over the Statue of Liberty implies so much. Especially given Grandgear and the US’ involvement in that.
Godzilla Minus Zero is due for release in Japan on November 3rd, the same date the original movie released in 1954. It’ll open in the US November 6th and everywhere else not long after. Godzilla Minus One and the beautiful black-and-white version Godzilla Minus Colour are on Netflix now.
