Following the success of their Philip Hinchcliffe book, the mad scientists at Roundel Books have announced the next strand in their DNA of Doctor Who books with the Graham Williams Years. Edited by Gary Russell, the book features new perspectives and essays from a wide variety of writers, plus new insights from Williams himself using newly discovered audio interviews and convention footage.
Editor Gary Russell says; “We’re incredibly happy to continue the range with The Graham Williams Years – twenty brand new essays about his productions, interstitial essays in Graham’s own words, plus lovely new art from John Ridgway, Will Brooks and Aaron Lowe. I’m so very proud of this new volume and really hope you enjoy it as much as you seem to have done the first.”
Essays cover a wide variety of subjects; from the use of satire, to depictions of British folklore, the portrayal of Earth and Humanity in the future, the role of Romana, Graham Williams’s legacy, the influence of the era’s three script editors (including Douglas Adams), the impact of Star Wars on Doctor Who and much, much more. The team have pulled together an incredible list of contributors and essayists including Eddie Arnold, Mark Blayney, Nicholas Briggs, Russell Cook, Sue Cowley, Jen DiGiacomo, Abie Ekenezar, Joe Ford, Jon Helm, Si Hunt, Jess Jurkovik, Paul Kirkley, Jamie Lenman, Alistair McGown, Nicholas Pegg, Timothy Rideout, Alina Morgan Roth, Miles Taylor, Damien Timmer and Tim Worthington. The emphasis is on fun and thoughtful viewpoints, carefully curated and crafted into a book that should be on every classic Who fans shelf.
As with their sister company Cutaway Comics, Roundel Books make sure that every project is an absolute must for fans and collectors, with each book accompanied by a DVD packed with bonus features, from newly restored archive convention footage to exclusive audio commentaries. “We have a dedicated team going above and beyond to restore some very rare footage and it allows Graham’s voice to be heard as well as read,” says Sean Mason who produces the company’s discs.
“What a labour of love this book has been for everyone involved,” says Gary Russell. “We were so lucky that over the years [Graham] did give a number of candid interviews (including with me) and we were able to use all of those and combine them into a series of interstitials. As a result this book positively pulsates with Graham’s opinions, humour, thoughts and frequently self-deprecating views on Doctor Who, the television landscape of the late 1970s and the people he met and worked with such as Douglas Adams, Tom Baker, Robert Holmes, Mary Tamm, Lalla Ward, John Nathan-Turner and so many others. As a result his pieces are full of vim, vinegar and joy!”
The Kickstarter goes live Friday 10th October at 11am BST. The book will be available (in softback and hardback editions) and higher tier backers can look forward to exclusive t-shirts and art prints including limited edition, one of a kind, artwork by comics legend John Ridgway (Doctor Who, Hellblazer) and, for a very select number of backers, totally unique cover art. You can also receive a Thank You or be included in the book’s Dedication.
Other titles available from Roundel Books include The DNA Of Doctor Who: The Philip Hinchcliffe Years, The Time Team Uncovered (a new art book showcasing the work of comics legend Adrian Salmon) and Go Figure, a comprehensive guide to every Character Options Doctor Who action figure and playset. Their sister company Cutaway Comics just released a prequel to classic Who adventure Inferno (written by Gary Russell with John Ridgway on art duties) and will soon be launching a kickstarter for the long-awaited next step in their Paradise Towers saga, Paradise Continuum
