Acclaimed actor and new cast-member of The Hunger Games series of movies Philip Seymour Hoffman has been found dead in his New York apartment today (February 2), of a reported drug overdose. He was 46 years old.
The actor’s death poses a problem for the producers of the two-movie adaptation of the third Hunger Games’ novel, Mockingjay. The actor appeared in last November’s sequel Catching Fire in the role of Plutarch Heavensbee. The character has a significant role to play in the story of Mockingjay.
A distinctive actor and director, Philip Seymour Hoffman won a Best Actor Oscar for his role as Truman Capote in the 2005 biopic, Capote. He was also Oscar-nominated three times in the Best Supporting Actor category for his roles in Charlie Wilson’s War (2007), Doubt (2008), and as cult guru Lancaster Dodd in The Master (2012).
The Scent of a Woman (1992), starring Al Pacino, brought him to the notice of a variety of filmmakers who would become future collaborators. Among the many movies he appeared in were Twister (1996), Boogie Nights (1997), Magnolia (1999, both directed by Paul Thomas Anderson), The Talented Mr Ripley (1999), and Mission: Impossible III (2006). After his Oscar win for Capote, Hoffman won roles and acclaim in a distinctive run of movies including (besides the three he was Oscar-nominated for) Synecdoche, New York (2008), Moneyball (2011), and A Late Quartet (2012). In 2010 he directed the romantic comedy-drama Jack Goes Boating and played the main role of Jack, a shy limo driver who tentatively begins a relationship with the equally shy Connie (Amy Ryan).
