Barry NewberyBarry Newbery, whose designs were so important to the early years of Doctor Who, has died.

Telos Publishing announced the news on their Facebook page, after hearing from Newbery’s daughter; the designer died in his sleep on the morning of February 25.

Born in 1927, Newbery was assigned to work on Doctor Who in its earliest days, contributing to the first serial, as well as Marco Polo, The Aztecs, The Crusade, The Time Meddler, The Daleks Masterplan, The Ark and The Gunfighters for William Hartnell’s Doctor, as well as The Dominators for Troughton, Doctor Who and the Silurians for Pertwee, The Brain of Morbius, The Masque of Mandragora and The Invisible Enemy for Tom Baker and finally The Awakening for Peter Davison.

His work was also seen on series as diverse as Softly Softly, The Expert, The Onedin Line and the comedy adventures of Eric Sykes. An account of his early career can be found here.
