Dan O’Bannon’s 1985 cult zombie classic gets the 4K treatment in a terrific, limited edition set from Arrow.
Seen at the time of release as an inferior spoof of George A Romero’s zombie movies (Day of the Dead had just come out) this horror comedy release has aged far better than most of the ‘Dead’ sequels and serves up laughs and gore in equal measure.
Fans of the movie will no doubt already own it on some other physical media, but this is the perfect opportunity to upgrade to a superior quality picture. The new 4K restoration from the original negative is presented in Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible), really making the blacks and reds pop in the colour palette. As well as the original lossless mono audio track, there’s DTS-HD MA 5.1 surround, meaning that you can pump out the 80s pop soundtrack in your living room.
There’s four audio commentaries, archive featurettes about the screenwriter, effects artist, soundtrack and the movie’s locations, deleted scenes, trailers and more. The limited edition release also includes a Blu-ray of More Brains!, the exhaustive feature-length documentary about the making of the film, and a booklet of new writing.
Verdict: A gorgeous transfer and a healthy bunch of extras make for a no-brainer of a purchase. 9/10
