James Caan, star of Rollerball, Alien Nation and Misery among many other acclaimed roles, has died aged 82.

Although best known perhaps for his role in The Godfather, Caan appeared in a number of genre films, headlining the graphic futuresports Rollerball in 1975, as well as playing the human cop in 1988’s Alien Nation, and the stranded writer in Rob Reiner’s adaptation of Stephen King’s Misery in 1991. His other genre work included Get Smart (TV series and feature film), Dick Tracy and Elf with one of his last roles being in the horror tale Sicilian Vampire.

Misery director Rob Reiner said, “I was so saddened to hear about Jimmy leaving us. I loved working with him. Besides being a talented instinctive actor, he was the only Jew I knew who could rope a calf with the best of them. Sending my love to his family.”

  1. I first saw James Caan in Brian’s Song. It was a very special intro for me to a remarkable actor who will be greatly missed.
