Suranne Jones, currently starring in ITV cop drama Scott and Bailey, has been cast as Eve opposite The Fades’ Tom Ellis in Joe Ahearne’s adaptation of James Herbert’s horror story The Secret of Crickley Hall.

Jones played Idris, who turned out to be the personification of the TARDIS, in last season’s Doctor Who story The Doctor’s Wife. The rest of the cast have major genre credits between them with The Fades star Iain De Caestecker, Primeval‘s Douglas Henshall, Game of Thrones and Being Human‘s Donald Sumpter, and Star Trek guest star David Warner all appearing.

The story sees Eve and her husband move to Crickley Hall a year after their son goes missing; however, she starts to hear his voice at the hall, and tries to discover what links her child to the house. The series is set in both the present day and 1943.

“Everyone loves a good ghost story and James Herbert is an iconic writer in the genre,” Joe Ahearne said. “He’s come up with a really thrilling and moving story that delights you while it’s terrifying you. It’s a testament to his craft that we’ve attracted such a great cast to play the characters he created.”

The Secret of Crickley Hall will be aired in the autumn on BBC One (expected to be around Halloween).

  1. This is great news for genre fans, and more obvious support of a classic author such as Herbert. Though not his more traditional older pure horror work, this is still a interesting very positive venture
