American actor and director Rob Reiner has died aged 78.

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time,” his family said in a statement.

Reiner’s career included classics in many genres, with The Princess Bride, Stand By Me and Misery all released within a four period between 1986 and 1990, as well as through his production company, Castle Rock.
