Louise Fletcher, best known as the original Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and to genre fans as Kai Winn on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, has died aged 88.

The Oscar winner went on to appear in the critically attacked Exorcist II: The Heretic immediately after playing Ratched; other genre roles included Mama Dracula, Firestarter, Invaders from Mars and the 1980s Twilight Zone and Tales from the Crypt before her 14 episode stint as the Bajoran Kai on the third live action Star Trek show. She also appeared in VR.5, The Stepford Husbands, Brimstone and Heroes.
