Stranger Things isn’t so much over as it is resting. We’ve got that mysterious spin-off still in the works, there’s persistent (if not especially well sourced) rumours about the play and a possible eventual Netflix broadcast and now an animated prequel. The first trailer from Tales from ’85 has just hit and it’s honestly pretty charming. Alasdair Stuart takes a look.

0.19 – ‘These woods hide a LOT of mistakes.’

Kind of feel like Hop threatening child murder is at least a touch out of character but he’s had a hard year. Love the art style though.

0.22 – The ET of it all

KIDS ON BIKES! The simple joy of seeing them just being kids hanging out doing kid stuff is so cool to have back.

0.30 – Max

Art like this, especially with an all new voice cast, is very hard to do. But Max in particular looks great. Sadie Sink’s combination of fragility and strength just perfectly captured.

0.45 – TERROR BENEATH THE SNOW!

I also love how the weather is an inciting incident here. It’s a nice way of keeping the season as a ‘bottle’ and gives it a unique visual identity too.

0.54 – Odd suit

That’s a slightly odd biohazard suit, with the tiny visor. But it’s also fairly clearly from Hawkins Lab.

0.54 – Always Something There To Remind Me

That’s Always Something There To Remind Me you’re hearing. The original was by Dionne Warwick and I’ve not had any luck tracking this one down yet. I LOVE how it fuses with the Stranger Things theme though.

0.54 – Awww what a cute little OH GOD!

The split mouth/maw is a nice call back to the demogorgon. ALSO FLAMETHROWERS?!

1.09 – THE GREAT PUMPKIN?!

If this is an elaborate callback to the 1966 Charlie Brown special It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown I will applaud

1.22 – Pumpkin Kaiju

Yep! Sure seems to be. I’m applauding!

1.35 – Animated Steve is also perfect

Much like real world Steve

Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 releases on April 23rd and stars Brett Gibson as Hopper, Luca Diaz as Mike, Brooklyn Davey Norstedt as Eleven, Braxton Quinney as Dustin, Elisha Williams as Max, Ben Plessala as Will, and Jolie Hoang-Rappaport as Max. Notable guest stars include Janeane Garofalo, Odessa A’zion, and Lou Diamond Phillips.

And doesn’t that ‘Tales’ suggest we might be getting more than one story…
