The new Doctor Who podcast, BBC Sounds’ Doctor Who Redacted, has received a warm welcome from many fans, and creators Juno Dawson and Ella Watts chatted with SFB about the genesis, ethos and fun…

Ella:  When I first met the Doctor Who social guys I was trying to explain the specific character of the drama that we’d made and I said, ‘You know Love & Monsters? Imagine if someone combined that with the first episode of New Who, that’s sort of where we are.’

Juno: And as well I think, you come for the Doctor and you come for the monsters, and there are aliens and there are scary robots and ghosts, but along the way, I think, you will learn something about Cleo’s life and her relationship with her mum. I think you’ll learn something about Abby and Shawna’s relationship.

I say this with a lot of the projects that I write: come for the monsters and stay for the character development. I think queerness is not a plot. I think that’s something that a lot of writers could do with making a note of. Queerness in and of itself is not the plot of this podcast: they just happen to be queer and that means that they arrive at episode 1 with a lot of baggage.

  1. I’ve been a fan of Doctor Who fan-based projects since I saw a Canadian Doctor Who fan film called Victimsight in 2009. Thank you for these interviews to remind us how Whovians, Trekkers and sci-fi fans can make the most special and heartfelt story contributions to our favourite sci-fi universes.
