Multiple award winning science fiction author James E. Gunn has passed away aged 97.

Gunn was a professional writer for over 70 years, with his first published fiction in 1947 with his first SF sales two years later. He was a renowned editor, overseeing the Road to Science Fiction series, and was founding director of the Center for the Study of Science Fiction at the University of Kansas.

He was President of the Science Fiction Writers of America from 1971–1972 and President of the Science Fiction Research Association from 1980–1982.  The SFWA made him a Grand Master of Science Fiction in 2007.

Amongst his SF books was a Star Trek novel, novelising Theodore Sturgeon’s story The Joy Machine.

SFB interviewed Gunn in 2017 to accompany the release of his novel Transformation.

“I’ve found that age may bring wisdom, but it also brings a loss of energy and imagination. So I try to make up for that by writing more wisely and devices help make better use of time and effort.”
