Two beloved Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler tales are coming to the Royal Albert Hall next year – with a concert orchestra in tow.

The Gruffalo + The Snail and the Whale in Concert premieres at the venue in May 2020.

This double-bill will see the two animated films, produced by Magic Light Pictures, and based on the picture books written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, accompanied live by the BBC Concert Orchestra, with both the author and artist making an on-stage appearance.

There will be three performances, including a relaxed presentation suitable for children and adults with autism, sensory and communication impairments and learning disabilities as well as individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind and partially sighted.

Lucy Noble, Artistic Director at the Royal Albert Hall, said: “We’re proud to present this unique event, which will bring to life these two wonderful family films. Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s picture books have enchanted children young and old, and this show will allow audiences to experience these magical adaptations in an all-new way.

“I’m especially thrilled that we’re able to present a relaxed performance of the show, opening up the event to audiences who might not otherwise be able to enjoy it.”

The Gruffalo, voiced by a host of stars including Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, James Corden, John Hurt and Tom Wilkinson, was first screened on Christmas Day 2009, and continues to delight audiences every year on BBC One. The film was nominated for a BAFTA and an Oscar.

A decade on, BBC One will present The Snail and the Whale, also from Magic Light Pictures, the tale of an unlikely friendship, a tour of the world and a heroic rescue, with voice talent including Rob Brydon, Sally Hawkins, and Dame Diana Rigg.

Rob Brydon, who stars in both films, said: “It’s always so wonderful to work with Magic Light on these animated specials. The Snail and the Whale is a longstanding favourite in our house. It’s an epic journey across the globe, where the tiniest creature and the mightiest mammal experience the vastness of our planet together.”

Both productions feature music by René Aubry, whose score for The Snail and the Whale will be performed live for the first time at the Hall event, conducted by Terry Davies.

At the relaxed event, chill-out spaces will be available outside the auditorium, and BSL interpretation will be provided.
