Famed American writer Harlan Ellison has died, aged 84.

The news was broken on Twitter by family friend,  Christine Valada, widow of Len Wein:

Ellison is still best known for his story for Star Trek, The City on the Edge of Forever, but he was a massively successful writer in many fields (woe betide anyone who tried to “ghettoize” him into a category). He also made major contributions to The Twilight Zone and acted as a consultant for Babylon 5. He won multiple awards for his writing, both for print and the screen – and if you’ve not read any of his prose, get out and read some now!
