Following various comments by Torchwood star John Barrowman over the past few days, Doctor Who head writer Steven Moffat has issued a statement:
“If you don’t give a damn about Torchwood, skip this post. For those of you who do .…..
“You may be aware that John Barrowman has been saying, publicly, that I’ve been blocking a new series of Torchwood. To be very clear – I haven’t blocked it; I wouldn’t block it; I wouldn’t even be ABLE to block it. I didn’t even know a revival had been mooted till I read about it on the Internet. As John perfectly well knows, it’s not my show and I could no more prevent it happening that he could cancel Sherlock. I am bewildered, and a little cross, even to be included in this conversation. For the record, I really liked the show (especially the third series) and would be very happy to see more – monsters and mayhem, why not? But the fact is, it has nothing to do with me. Please pass this on to the anxious and the angry – I’ve had enough hate mail now.”
Poor Mr Moffat! We now know what he can’t do but very little of what he can do.We,the Fans of Torchwood, were shocked at the crude way the BBC cut our drama and made that known at the time. Only the cast were supportive. So Mr Moffatt, what can you do or would that mean you’d have to declare which side you were on?
What do you mean “the crude way that BBC cut our drama and made it known at the time”?
It was Russell T. Davies who put the show on indefinite hiatus because he needed to focus on caring for his partner, who has a brain tumour. Are you suggesting that the show should have been taken away from RTD?
Anyone else find it very odd that in all this talk from John Barrowman about bringing back Torchwood there hasn’t been any mention of Russell T. Davies? Or that RTD hasn’t gone on record about being supportive of the return of Torchwood at this time? It’s not like RTD is media shy.
It was Russell T. Davies that put the show on indefinite hiatus, because his needed to care for his partner, who has a brain tumour. I think what is really going on here is a power struggle for the control of Torchwood between John Barrowman and RTD. Moffat doesn’t have the power to block the return of Torchwood, but RTD would, if oh, say John Barrowman and his sister wanted to take over writing for show. They are writing a Torchwood comic after all.
John Barrowman couldn’t come out and say that he was fighting with RTD because trying to wrestle control of the show from its series creator , given the circumstances, don’t exactly cast him in a favourable light. So instead, he makes innuendo about Steven Moffat to generate fan outrage and letters to the BBC.
Complaining about Jack not being brought back to Doctor Who makes him look like a whiny baby in my mind. The only RTD era companion who has been back in the Moffat era is Billie, and she was playing a different character. He might be able to make the case that Moffat doesn’t want him back for some reason, if other companions had been back but he hadn’t been invited, but that hasn’t happened. Show runners are not obligated to bring anyone back.
Unfortunately, about 80% of Torchwood was *absolute* crap – I’d imagine that’s a bit of an obstacle when it comes to bringing it back.
Really, really quite horrible indeed.
Barrowman needs to move on with his life and stop waiting for a Torchwood return.
Personally I thought Torchwood was a great show and would love to see a return. I knowcwe all have our own tastes, so respect other’s views.
Loved the story lines and uniqueness of the show.
Would definately watch a new series.
