Kenny Baker, best known for playing R2-D2 in the Star Wars saga, has died aged 81.
Baker appeared in the first six movies inside the diminutive droid, as well as playing an Ewok in 1983’s Return of the Jedi. He turned up in numerous other genre films of the 1980s, including Flash Gordon, Time Bandits and Willow. On TV, he was in the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special, as well as the BBC’s version of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
He had been ill for some time, but was credited as a “consultant” for R2-D2 for the return of the Star Wars movies last year with The Force Awakens.
