Daredevil 1Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Marvel’s team behind the new Daredevil TV show, set to premiere on Netflix in 2015, have confirmed some key details.

“The Avengers are here to save the universe and Daredevil is here to save the neighbourhood,” TV head Jeph Loeb explained, confirming that the show will stick to the Hell’s Kitchen area of New York where Matt Murdoch grew up, even if it is definitely part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, like Agents of SHIELD.

Showrunner Steven S. DeKnight noted that the show “would rather lean toward The Wire than what’s considered a classic superhero television show” and that they took their cues from movies such as The French Connection.

Charlie Cox, who plays Murdoch/Daredevil, commented that he isn’t playing “a man without fear” (the tagline used for the Marvel character originally) but “a man with fear, but he on a daily basis decides to confront that fear and to overcome it”.

The season will focus firmly on Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk, aka the Kingpin, and will examine his backstory. “Fisk really felt like the right yin to the yang for Matt, and for what we wanted to do this season,” DeKnight said, although he didn’t rule out incorporating Bullseye into the narrative down the line.
